At Royal Lytham and St Anne’s, the coastal winds sweep sand wild across the fairways, bending the trees horizontal.
It’s a beast of a course, one that famously needs the ‘wisdom of a serpent’ to conquer. One with nearly 200 bunkers. But it’s also a place of myth and legend, and of the ghost of legends too.
Royal Lytham has hosted ten British Opens and a brace of Ryder Cups. It’s a course brawled with and beaten by the great and the good of golf: Bobby Jones, Bobby Locke, Bob Charles, Peter Thomson, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Tom Lehman and David Duval.
These players have created a weight of history that’s at its heaviest in the Clubroom overlooking the final green.
Here, you see Bobby Jones, triumphant after his miracle shot on the 17th. You see him arm-in-arm with Watrous as they walk off the 18th. And you see Seve chipping to within an inch of the 72nd hole, and to within touching distance of greatness.
